Idle Idols

The denunciation of idols is a common characteristic of Psalms.  This is necessary because these people lived in the midst of idolatry where the scorning of idol-deities was constantly needed.

In the Psalm there is a contrast in the powerful God and the powerless idols.  It says of God. "he hath done whatsoever he pleased."  But all that could be said of the idols is:
They have mouths, but they speak not.
They have ears, but they hear not.
Noses have they, but they smell not.
They have hands, but the handle not.
Feet have they, but they walk not.
Idle idols they have the organs, but not the sensibilities.
They are the deified representations of a people's own frailties and passions.  And a study of a nation's gods will give you a nation's history.
Idols are only "the work of men's hands."  Having been made by man, they are inferior to him; and if there should be any worshiping of either, the idols ought to worship man.  So to make idolatry all the worse, it is practiced in reverse.

Not for Our Glory

When we properly relate ourselves to God, we put ourselves in the background.  We wear the Lord's name to glorify Him not ourselves.  We shine to His glory not to be applauded.  We give of our means because we have given ourselves not to be seen of men.  We pray to be heard of God not to be acclaimed by others.  Now these personal questions:
Why attend church?  To worship God or to hold up our reputation?
Why construct a new church building?  To glorify God or to exalt ourselves?
Why give?  To please God or man?
Why seek a church office or position?  To serve God or to dignify ourselves?
If we follow a make believe religion to impress people, our only reward will come from people none from God ( Matthew 6:5 ).

He that does good for goods sake seeks neither praise nor reward, though sure of both at last.

Reverence His Name

It chills my blood to hear the blest Supreme
Rudely appealed to on each trifling theme;
Maintain your rank, vulgarity despise;
To swear is neither brave, polite, nor wise.
You would not swear upon the bed of death;
Reflect! Your Maker yet may stop your breath.
William Cowper
